Park four vehicles side by side in a Swartz Bay ferry lineup, each wearing some version of an electrified badge, and it’s entirely possible that not one of them works the way the others do. One never runs on electricity alone. One does, for a block or two at a time. One can cover a full commute without starting its engine. One doesn’t have an engine to start. All four get called “electrified,” which is accurate and also nearly useless for someone trying to choose between them.

The confusion clears up quickly once the labels get set aside. Only two things really change from one level to the next: how big the battery is, and whether the vehicle has a plug. Everything else, from fuel economy to charging habits to how the vehicle feels at a stoplight, follows from those two facts. Across the lineup at Carson Automotive Group, every electrified model sits on one of four rungs of that ladder, and the simplest way to tell them apart is to ask what the gasoline engine is doing at each step.

The Two Things That Actually Change

Battery size determines how much driving can happen on electricity before the engine has to help. A mild-hybrid battery is tiny, measured in fractions of a kilowatt-hour. A conventional hybrid’s is small but useful. A plug-in hybrid’s is large enough to cover real distances. An electric vehicle’s is the whole story.

The plug determines where that electricity comes from. Without one, the battery fills only from regenerative braking, capturing energy the vehicle would otherwise waste when it slows. With one, the battery fills from the wall, which is the only way to get enough charge for meaningful electric-only driving. Line those two variables up and the four levels sort themselves out.

What the Engine Is Doing at Each Level

At the mild-hybrid level, the engine is always working. A small 48-volt system assists it, smoothing the start-stop cycle at intersections, adding a modest push during acceleration, and shaving a little fuel from every trip. The vehicle never moves on electricity alone, and the driver rarely notices the system at all, which is the point. It’s the least expensive way to make a gasoline engine more efficient, and it changes nothing about how the vehicle is driven or fuelled.

At the hybrid level, the engine sometimes rests. A larger battery and motor can move the vehicle by themselves at low speeds, through a parking lot or a slow crawl of traffic, and the engine cuts in and out as needed. There’s still no plug, so the battery relies entirely on braking to recharge. This is where fuel economy improves noticeably in stop-and-go driving, and where the vehicle starts to feel different, going quiet at a light and humming away from it.

At the plug-in hybrid level, the engine mostly rests, at least on shorter trips. The battery is large enough to cover a typical commute on electricity alone, provided it was charged overnight, and the engine only takes over once that charge runs down or the driver asks for more than the motor can give. Miss a charge and the vehicle simply behaves like a regular hybrid until the next opportunity to plug in.

At the electric level, the engine is gone. Everything runs on the battery, every kilometre comes from the wall or a public charger, and the vehicle’s range on a full charge becomes the number that matters most. There’s no fallback to gasoline, which is the trade-off for never buying it.

Which Rung Matches Which Week


The right level has less to do with the technology than with the driveway. Without reliable access to a plug at home or work, the two lower rungs deliver their full benefit with no change in habits, and the upper two deliver only part of theirs. With a plug, a plug-in hybrid can quietly turn most weekday driving electric while keeping a gasoline engine in reserve for the ferry-and-Interior trips that don’t fit inside a charge. A full electric vehicle rewards a driver whose routine fits its range comfortably, with margin left over for a cold morning or a detour.

The plug also asks different things at each of the upper two levels. A plug-in hybrid’s battery is small enough that a standard household outlet can refill it overnight, which makes it workable for a house with a driveway and a nearby socket. An electric vehicle’s battery is large enough that a dedicated 240-volt Level 2 charger becomes the practical minimum for daily use, and that’s a harder ask in a condo parkade than in a garage. Where a vehicle sleeps at night has as much to do with the right rung as where it drives during the day.

Incentive programs for the upper rungs, federal and provincial, have shifted more than once in the past couple of years, and eligibility depends on the model and how it’s classified. It’s worth confirming what currently applies before it factors into a decision, rather than assuming last year’s rules still hold.

One Example per Rung From the Group’s Lineup

Each level has a clear representative among the vehicles already moving through the group’s dealerships. The Mazda CX-90 Mild Hybrid pairs a 3.3 L turbocharged inline-six with a 48-volt mild-hybrid system, keeping the engine in charge while trimming fuel use. The Ford Maverick Hybrid uses a 2.5 L four-cylinder engine and an electric motor, with no plug and the ability to creep along on electricity at low speed. The Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV carries a 22.7 kWh battery for 72 kilometres of electric-only range, enough to cover most daily driving before its 2.4 L four-cylinder engine is asked to do anything. The Ford Mustang Mach-E has no engine at all, running on battery power for up to 515 kilometres on a charge depending on configuration.

The word “electrified” will keep showing up on more of the vehicles in that ferry lineup every year, and it will keep meaning four different things. What separates them isn’t marketing. It’s a battery that gets bigger at every step and a plug that appears halfway up the ladder. Ask what the engine is doing, and the level a vehicle sits on, and whether it fits the week ahead, tends to answer itself.
